Carnegie hadn't realised that since 1999 Fife Council has written off a total of £4.4 million in rent arrears, with the most recent write off being £400,000 in the 2007/8 financial year.
Worse than that is the fact that other information tabled in the Scottish Parliament suggests that in 2002 Fife Council had nearly £2.7 million owed to it by tenants in rent arrears.
Fife Council has budgetary problems which have lead it to cut services and raise charges for those that are still being provided. They should really do better in managing the Council's housing stock so that they collect the rent from their tenants that is due.
