Never Mind The Ballots.

Carnegie sees that Fife's Councillors seem to have supported the idea of holding elections for local government and the Scottish Parliament on different days, rather than at the same time as they did last year.

"A MOVE which would mean voters heading for the polls to elect local councillors and Scottish MSPs in separate elections is being backed by Fife Council. The council decision comes in response to an independent review of Scottish elections and supports the Scottish Government view that local government elections should be held midway through the term of the Scottish Parliament."

But hang on ... is Carnegie wrong, but would the effect of this further proposed change mean that the current crop of Councillors would have their current term of office extended by a further year to five years meaning they would stand for election in 2012 rather than in 2011, and didn't the Scottish Parliament actually extend the term of office of councillors from three years to four years precisely to hold the elections on the same day last year? So Councillors who should have been elected for just three years will find themselves pocketing their allowances for five years? Not very democratic thinks Carnegie, but obviously the Councillors who have most to gain from the change know best, don't they?
